Concussions And School

In 2011, the MA DPH issued a regulation requiring the creation of policies and procedures for the prevention and management of sports-related head injuries for grades 6-12 with extracurricular sports in public schools
Pre-participation Requirements

Before the start of every season, students and parents must submit the pre-participation form providing up to date information about the student's concussion history. Please ask the school nurse for this form each sport season.
Volleyball
Any student who sustains a head injury or suspected concussion, or loses consciousness, should be removed from play immediately and may not return to play that day.  The student should not return to play until they have been medically cleared by a medical provider

After recovering from a concussion, a student's schedule may need to be adjusted to avoid fatigue or the return of symptoms.  Discuss with your medical provider and share this information with your school nurse.

All 6th-8th graders are eligible to play if they have an up to date physical within the last 13 months of the start of each sport season and they have passed in a pre-participation concussion form signed by the student and parent.
